Global IaaS market worth $44.5 billion in 2019, says Gartner

The infrastructure as a service (IaaS) space keeps on growing: new data from Gartner has argued the global market was worth $44.5 billion last year, with the hyperscalers further entrenching their positions.

The analyst firm said in a note the worldwide IaaS market grew 37.7% in 2019, with the top five players accounting for 80% of the market, up from 77% the year before.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) remained top of the shop as of the end of 2019, with Gartner estimating a...

AWS beats $10bn in revenues again – albeit slowed growth – while Google Cloud breaks $3bn

Amazon Web Services (AWS) broke the $10 billion revenue mark again for its most recent quarter - albeit with slowed growth - while Google Cloud has seen a 43% year-over-year climb in an otherwise challenging quarter for Alphabet.

AWS recorded $10.8bn (£8.23bn) in revenues for Q220, an increase of just under 29% from this time last year and a rise of 5.8% from the previous quarter. Google Cloud, meanwhile, broke the $3bn mark at $3.01bn (£2.29bn). Total revenues for Amazon and...

Why one IaaS provider is not the same as another: 10 aspects to consider

Saying “yes” to a cloud strategy is the easy part. Eliminating on-premise infrastructure and management overheads in favour of greater agility, efficiency, security, connectivity, cost-savings and more makes a great business case. However, once the strategy is signed off, the hard work begins: how to choose a cloud provider to deliver IaaS that is “just right” for your business? That’s when the huge array of...

The decade in cloud: Analysing the ‘remarkable transformation’ through SaaS, IaaS and PaaS rise

The dawn of a new decade represents a good opportunity for a more rounded assessment of cloud computing to take place – and according to industry analyst Synergy Research, the ‘remarkable transformation’ has seen the enterprise data centre hit hardest.

Synergy has kicked off 2020 with a couple of notes looking back at wider enterprise IT spending, as well as the impact of SaaS revenues....

The silence of the cloud: What is truly driving growth – and what should be?

Opinion Cloud in various iterations has been around now for approaching 20 years (longer if you go back the concept of compute as a public utility introduced by scientist John McCarthy in the 1960s), many remembering seeing iterations such as the ASP (application service provider) as a failed step along that journey until we matured to the SaaS, PaaS, IaaS and varying other ‘as a service’ offerings now in the market.

Why cloud infrastructure is an increasingly exclusive club – with only a few having the cash to get in

The figures keep going up and up for the hyperscalers – as new data from Synergy Research shows another new record for hyperscale operator capex in Q318.

Hyperscaler capex was at more than $26 billion for the most recent quarter, with spending for the first three quarters of 2018 up by 53% when compared with this time last year. This quarter’s figure is the second highest of all time; Q1...

Almost a third of key enterprise IT spending to be cloud based by 2022, says Gartner

Cisco may have said that cloud traffic would represent 95% of total data centre traffic by 2021 – but how much of that will be driven by the enterprise? New figures from Gartner give an intriguing picture.

The analyst firm has forecast that by 2022 more than a quarter (28%) of spending within key enterprise IT markets will be cloud-based, up from 19% this year. The findings, which have been...

Global public cloud IaaS industry grew 30% year on year – with AWS holding half of the market

The global infrastructure as a service (IaaS) public cloud services market grew by almost 30% in 2017 to total $23.5 billion (£18bn) according to the latest figures from Gartner – with Amazon Web Services (AWS) securing more than half of the global market.

The figures, which appear in the analyst firm’s latest market share analysis, put Amazon Web Services (AWS) well in clear at the top of the tree with Microsoft a clear second place. No surprises there – yet...

Netskope acquires Sift Security for next generation IaaS tools

Netskope is looking to the next generation of cloud security with the acquisition of Sift Security.

The acquisition, which closed in June, will see Sift's infrastructure as a service (IaaS) breach detection and visualisation tool Cloud Hunter move into Netskope's Security Cloud offering.
